US strengthens advanced nuclear fuel supply with TRISO and HALEU initiatives

The United States is expanding efforts to strengthen its domestic supply of advanced nuclear fuel through new initiatives focused on TRISO fuel production and the development of high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU), supporting the next generation of nuclear reactors.

Federal agencies, national laboratories, and private industry are collaborating to increase the production of advanced nuclear fuels that are expected to play a key role in future small modular reactors (SMRs) and advanced reactor designs. The initiatives aim to reduce reliance on foreign fuel supplies while improving energy security and supporting clean electricity generation.

TRISO, or tristructural isotropic fuel, is designed with multiple protective coating layers surrounding each fuel particle. These layers help contain radioactive materials even under extreme operating conditions, making the fuel more resistant to heat and mechanical stress than conventional nuclear fuel.

HALEU, which contains a higher concentration of the uranium-235 isotope than traditional commercial reactor fuel, is considered essential for many advanced reactor technologies. Developers say HALEU enables improved reactor efficiency, longer operating cycles, and greater design flexibility for next-generation nuclear systems.

Officials said expanding domestic production capacity for both TRISO fuel and HALEU is critical to supporting the deployment of advanced reactors expected to provide reliable, low-carbon electricity for industrial facilities, data centers, and power grids. The initiatives also seek to establish a secure and resilient nuclear fuel supply chain within the United States.

Industry experts note that advanced nuclear reactors are being developed to complement renewable energy sources by providing continuous electricity generation regardless of weather conditions. They believe a stable supply of advanced nuclear fuel will be necessary to accelerate commercialization and reduce dependence on imported nuclear materials.

The latest investments reflect the United States’ broader strategy to strengthen its nuclear energy sector through research, manufacturing, and fuel production. Analysts say continued progress in TRISO and HALEU development could help support future clean energy goals while enhancing the country’s technological leadership in advanced nuclear power.
